It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? From Picture Books to YA!
It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. It is a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It’s also a great chance to see what others are reading right now…you just might discover the next “must-read” book!
Jen Vincent, of Teach Mentor Texts, and Kellee decided to give It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children’s literature – picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit – join us! We love this meme and think you will, too.
We encourage everyone who participates to support the blogging community by visiting at least three of the other book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

Last Week’s Journeys
Kellee: This last week, I had the pleasure of reading The Real Boy by Anne Ursu. I can see now why everyone is raving about the book; it deserves all of the recognition it is getting. Although it was a single book week, it was a wonderful single book!
Ricki: This week, I listened to the I Am the Messenger audiobook. I love Markus Zusak, and I really thought I would love this one. I found the storyline to be very sweet and the book’s message to be good, but it felt a bit slow to me. Ed’s adventures became a bit repetitive for me, and perhaps I would have enjoyed the book more if I wasn’t listening to it.
This Week’s Expeditions
Kellee: This week I plan on reading Jedi Academy by Jeffrey Brown. I actually saw a student reading this at school and began talking to her about Jeffrey Brown books. When she found out I hadn’t read this one, she brought it to me when she finished so I could borrow it. I look forward to talking to her about it.
I also have a pile of picture books we are going to review soon that I want to read and I cannot wait! The pile includes Penguin on Vacation and Bogart and Vinnie—both picture books I have been waiting to read.
Ricki: I am reading several books at once. I have about 50 pages left of The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp, which is very fun. It reminds me very much of The Catcher in the Rye. I am still listening to Annexed by Sharon Dogar on my rides to and from work. I am slowly pounding my way through the 2014 Printz list on GoodReads’ Listopia. I want to be prepared! Anyone have any predictions?

I NEED to read THE REAL BOY soon! I just got the audiobook and it’s next on my list to listen to.
Same here! I haven’t gotten it yet, but it is top on my TBR list.
You both will really enjoy it. I love a good middle grade fantasy that is so smart and well done.
I also enjoyed The Real Boy. I just picked up Jedi Academy today. Question, I had it as an arc, but didn’t read it in time. If I post a review on my site, should I go ahead and send that review to Netgalley even though it wasn’t from the ARC reading? Thoughts? Thanks for the Printz List link – though I really don’t need more for my TBR. Have a great week!
I would post it on NetGalley and then just put a comment in the bottom box that you read the actual book when it came out.
Glad you found the Printz link enjoyable. 🙂
Thanks Ricki. That is what I was thinking. That list looks great. There are quite a few that are already on my TBR anyway, but I would have a lot left to read. 😉
I agree with Ricki 🙂
I will never get through the whole list, but I will certainly give it a good-faith effort!
Jedi Academy is so much fun!!!
Kellee, I had the pleasure of reading an ARC of Real Boy several months ago and loved it. Ricki, Annexed is one that I’m looking forward to reading–will be curious to see what you think of it. On my blog today, I’ve reviewed a new Anne Frank story for young readers.

I think I would enjoy it more if I was reading it. It is a great book, but listening to it is very depressing. There are very few moments where the voice doesn’t sound sad, and it is really making my drives to work very sad. I expected this, due to the topic, but if I did it over again, I would have read it rather than listen to it.
Oh, I keep hearing such wonderful things about The Real Boy. I keep getting mixed signals on whether The Real Boy is a sequel to Breadcrumbs, though. Do I need to read Breadcrumbs first or is it actually a stand alone?
Not a sequel – just another book by the same author 🙂 Both are magical!
Add me to the list of those so excited to read The Real Boy! Jedi Academy is on my night stand as well Kellee. My children have read it and loved it. Thanks Ricki for the 2014 list link – I’m off to check it out. Happy reading to you both!
I hope you find it helpful! It is just a list that people have been using to vote. I just like to read the books that everyone is loving. An added bonus would be if one of the books end up winning the award and I read it ahead of time.
Jedi Academy is so much fun! Am about half way through 🙂 I’m going to have to buy my own 😀
Kellee- enjoy those beautiful picture books! Thrilled you enjoyed The Real Boy just as much! 🙂 Ricki, I am glad to know to just read I am the Messenger, enjoying Enchanted now, finished Sold, so powerful. I do admit that sometimes I listen to audiobooks at 1.25 speed to make myself pay attention. 🙂
Oh, that is really smart! I never thought of that. I wonder if I can figure out how to adjust my computer to do that. 🙂
Overdrive and Audible both have speed options, I can’t figure out how to do it on iTunes. 🙂
Thanks! I use iTunes, but I may switch over.
They are amazing picture books- cannot wait to share them 🙂
So excited about so many of you getting to read The Real Boy!
I can’t wait to read The Real Boy! I’m anxiously awaiting it from the library. I mention Journey in my post this week and describe it as a wonderful mashup of a David Wiesner book and Harold and the Purple Crayon. I love David Ezra Stein, so I’m happily adding that title to my TBR! Have a great week!
You will love it when you get to it 🙂
And I totally agree with you about Journey – so true!
I definitely want to read The Real Boy. That list of possible Printz books is so daunting! The ones I have read are all so great…what a difficult decision that will be for the committee. Have a good reading week!
Choosing a winner out of all of those amazing books must always be tough!
Everyone will love The Real Boy – a magical book!
I agree! I was just thinking about how difficult it will be to pick a winner this year! I don’t envy the Walden Award committee either. There are so many great choices!
It’s cool that a student lent you a book, K! And, R, I love lists and reading challenges and it’s always rewarding to cross a book off that list! So many books to read and most of them have been praised for various reasons!
A student with good taste too 🙂
