It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. Last Week’s Journeys
Kellee: Unfortunately, Kellee is currently at the E.R. with little Trent. He is having an allergic reaction. Please excuse her absence from this week’s post. She promises to update you about her reading adventures next Monday!
Ricki: I hope you aren’t disappointed that you are stuck with ME this week. Hopefully, I will impress you with my reading prowess.
Professional development texts: I finished TWO professional development books this week. I read Deborah S. Koch’s How to Say It: Grantwriting. I did learn a lot, but about half of this book felt obvious to me. Overall, I am glad I read it, though. I also finished Carol Grbich’s Qualitative Data Analysis: An Introduction. This was an excellent overview of all of the qualitative approaches. I recommend this book for anyone considering qualitative work.
Middle grade text: I am just about finished with Ann M. Martin’s Rain Reign, so I am going to cheat and call it done. I suspect it will be done by the time this post goes live at midnight. 🙂 I enjoyed this book and see why others liked it. I see why it is popular with middle grade students!
Picture books: I finished Elly Mackay’s Butterfly Park. This may have the most beautiful artwork I have ever seen in a book. The cut paper made it very charming, and I got lost in the illustrations. This is a very warm, inviting book. I also read a great nonfiction book, The Sky Painter: Louis Fuertes, Bird Artist by Margarita Engle. The poetry is fantastic, and I enjoyed learning about this man in our history. I have seen his paintings, but I loved learning about his background.

Ricki: My only immediate plan is to read Cody and the Fountain of Happiness by Tricia Springstubb because Kellee and I are reviewing it Friday. 🙂

It’s fun! Kellee started it with Jen several years ago. When Kellee and I started our blog almost two years ago, we started splitting responsibilities with Jen. I enjoy learning about what everyone is reading. 🙂
Curious to read your whole review of Rain Reign. I haven’t bought a copy yet because it’s not the sort of thing my students usually like, and the main character really annoyed me!
She didn’t annoy me. She reminded me a lot of a student I had who had Asperger’s. I thought it was a good book, overall. There are others I have loved more that have similar topics, but this one will stick with me. I am a bit biased. I prefer YAL over middle grade, so I always take that bias into account.
I hope Trent is feeling much better by now. I’ve been hearing so much about Rain Reign . I do need to find a copy to read soon.
It was enjoyable. Rose (the main character) will stick with me.

Oh, goodness. She would LOVE this book. I thought it was quite magical.
Oh, no! Please tell Kellee I hope everything works out well for Trent. Those kinds of experiences are scary as a parent.
You two posted a LOT last week. I was on spring break and camping (off the grid!) for most of the week, so no reviews from me – now I need to catch up!
I really want to read Rain Reign….but I have SOOO many middle-grade and YA books stacked up here! They need to stop publishing good books for a while to give me time to catch up. ha ha

Sue, I completely agree! Sometimes I just want to hit the pause button! We were very productive last week. We both have those slow weeks, so we completely understand! I hope your camping trip was fun!
I wonder if you read textbooks out loud to a baby with voice inflections, if that’ll be more interesting to the grown ups? I need to look for The Sky Painter! I just read another one of her books.
It would be more interesting, but I think it would be too slow-going. Ha ha!
Thank you everyone!!! It seems Trent has an allergy to penicillin. It got really bad quite quickly (hence the ER visit), but he is doing much better today. Thank you for all of your kind words!

Such great books that you wrote about this week. I’m a huge fan of Viva Frida, Little Roja Riding Hood, and Firebird.
Kellee – I hope all things are ok with Trent! I know what that emergency trip is like, it can be quite nerve wrecking until it’s over. And so often it seems like the doctors and nurses aren’t in nearly as much of a hurry as I want them to be in!
Ricki – I loved Rain Reign. It amazes me how Martin can write. I read A Corner of the Universe this summer, and the way she can tackle tough subjects is amazing. I have Cody too, but haven’t read it yet. I need to since it’s a book that would probably appeal to my students.
I just finished I Was Here by Gayle Forman. Reminded me of AtBP. If you read it, we’ll have to have a chat! I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Kellee, we had the same experience with our daughter when she was around two – super scary. I’m so glad that he’s doing okay now. Thanks for the update.
Rain Reign was one that I enjoyed. I am eager to see the butterfly book and I always like Margarita Engle so I’ll be watching for that one too. Have a great week!
Kellee So glad that you have figured this out. I recently found out that I have an allergy to Advil and possibly all anti-inflammatory meds – very scary – more so in your child! Give him a big hug for all of us. Ricki- isn’t Rain Reign a wow title? I just loved this book.
